  • Professor Matteo Borrini - (Un)solving Jack the Ripper

Between April 3, 1888, and February 13, 1891, eleven brutal murders cast a shadow over Whitechapel, one of the most impoverished districts in London’s East End. Of these victims, five women—Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly—are widely believed to have died at the hands of a single, unidentified killer who became known as Jack the Ripper.

Sensationalist press coverage, public panic, and a reluctance to believe such savagery could exist within the British Empire gave the case lasting infamy. Conspiracy theories flourished, while blame was cast on minorities and anyone seen as an outsider—due to race, mental illness, profession, or sexuality.

But over a century later, what can modern forensic science tell us about the Ripper’s identity?
Can we finally cut through the fog of myth and speculation?
